GreenTown Lake County was held at the College of Lake County in Grayslake, Illinois, and feature unique, innovative commentary and discussion regarding sustainability and its interaction with today’s society. These individuals included:

  • Bob Dixson, Mayor, City of Greensburg, Kansas

    Bob Dixson took the office of Mayor of Greensburg in May 2008. At GreenTown, Mayor Dixson will detail his efforts to sustainably transform the city of Greensburg, Kansas, a town destroyed by a F-5 tornado in May 2007. Since then, the town has resolved to rebuild the city using sustainable initiatives. These initiatives include reducing the city's carbon footprint through renewable energy and alternative means of transportation, recreating a vital downtown and emphasizing walkability, greening buildings through stricter codes and providing economic and social equality for its citizens.

  • Doug Farr, Author, Founding Principal and President, Farr Associates

Doug Farr is the founding principal and president of Farr Associates, an award-wining architecture and urban planning firm identified by the New York Times as "the most prominent of the city's cadre of ecologically sensitive architects." Farr Associates holds the unique distinction of being the first in the world to have designed three LEED Platinum buildings. Doug is on the board of the Congress of the New Urbanism, serves on the BioRegional Development Group board of directors, and was the founding chair of the LEED for Neighborhood Development project.

  • Suzanne Malec-McKenna, Commissioner, City of Chicago Department of Environment

    As Commissioner of the Department of Environment for the City of Chicago, Suzanne Malec-McKenna has nearly 20 years of experience in environmental issues, including sustainable development and ecological preservation and restoration. Suzanne has led key efforts for the department, including GreenCorps Chicago, the Chicago Center for Green Technology, the Calumet Initiative, the Chicago Conservation Corps and various water conservation and protection efforts.
